DESPITE a series of hefty interim profit slumps for the major UK banks there have been some signs that the worst of the credit crunch may be over for the sector.

RBS revealed it dived to a first half loss of pounds 691m, the second biggest banking loss in UK corporate history, thanks to pounds 5.9bn of credit writedowns.
