JONNY Wilkinson's face said it all. Fighting back tears, gulping down disappointment, England's talisman looked on with an angst that was obvious as South Africa's players celebrated at the Stade de France.

The talented 28-year-old is a player with a penchant for the fantastical - a man who likes to make the impossible possible, a competitor who considers defeat with distaste. Yet even for someone with Wilkinson's powers, this was a step too far and a challenge too great. He remains at the peak of his profession, but that will mean little to the Newcastle Falcon when he wakes this morning. England are no longer the world champions. It is something that Wilkinson in particular will find difficult to come to terms with as he assesses Saturday's epic encounter.
