My husband has worked at Ellington Colliery for 20 or more years.

I would like the public to be aware of the facts, being that of all the public money (their/our money) that UK Coal has had, Ellington Colliery has never ever received any new equipment. Everything the men have been given has had to be repaired by themselves in order to operate the colliery and maintain their own jobs.

What Do We Do When the Gas Goes Off?

In effect they have been fighting for their jobs and to keep the pit open for many, many years and people will have no idea of these facts. These men were winning the fight against the water down the pit. When UK Coal realised this, they pulled the plug, not because of safety reasons, but because they can make more money for their shareholders and executives by developing the land for housing etc.
