WHAT on earth is the point of David Cameron saying he will give power back to the electorate when he takes it away from members of his own party? Frustrated in his valiant attempts to change the male, middle-class image of the Conservative Party, he imposed on local parties shortlists of A-list candidates, designed to fast- track much-needed women, ethnic and gay candidates.

But according to those local parties, A-listers are mostly inexperienced with none of the local knowledge expected of an MP. Joanne Cash, a glamorous barrister and Cameron buddy, is the archetypal A-lister selected for the key marginal of Westminster North. The long-serving chairman there was also a woman, rich, powerful Amanda Sayers, like Ms Cash an alpha female. Each woman is blaming the other for what turned out to be a first-class cat- fight.
