Not long ago your paper gave very prominent coverage to the latest Conservative leader, Michael Howard, and his reference to "the moral case for lower taxation".

Now I can well understand the political case for lower taxation. The last time the Tories were in office taxes were reduced for top earners by an average of pounds 33,000 a year.

Meanwhile public services like health and education suffered and benefits for the poorest people in Britain were cut. Even our aid to the poverty stricken Third World countries was cut to satisfy those Tory supporters.

Martin Callanan, the one Conservative out of this region's four MEPs, is also on record as supporting tax cuts, almost as enthusiastic as the Conservative MP for Hexham, Peter Atkinson.
