ALAN Titchmarsh hadn't been inside the concert halls at The Sage Gateshead until yesterday's warm-up for the first of his two Christmas concerts with the Northern Sinfonia and youth choir Quay Voices. He had been by it, though.

"I was on a boat," explained the amiable Yorkshireman. "We were filming the kittiwakes nesting under the Tyne Bridge. We did pop into The Sage for lunch."
