Tie-Ups Rumours Boost S&N Shares

Scottish & Newcastle shares were stronger as vague bid rumours circulated in the beverages sector with several possible tie-ups mooted. Recent speculation has surrounded spirits and wines group Allied Domecq with Diageo and Pernod Ricard touted as possible bidders.

S&N itself has been linked to a bid from SABMiller, although one London analyst thought this "unlikely". The shares received a further fillip after its Russian subsidiary BBH reported volumes in the first two months of 2005 up around 20pc. S&N's shares picked up 7p to close at 454p.
