Like most people who were born and raised in the North-East, there is always the instinct to return once in a while to visit the relatives who remained, and bring and show friends the sights and sounds of the places we are always bragging about as being among the best in the country.

So it was this Easter weekend when we revisited the area.

Tide of Filth and Litter On Main Road Route

Everything was as we remembered. From the magnificence of Durham Cathedral and Tynemouth Priory, to the beautiful coastline between Roker and South Shields.

Sadly all this was overshadowed by the nauseating tide of filth and litter on the main road into and out of the region. The A1(M) gradually deteriorated the further north we drove, with the area around the Washington services reminiscent of a landfill site.
