Campaigners fighting a massive new opencast coal mine in Northumberland won a significant victory yesterday as county councillors came out against the plans.

Members of the authority's Area Committee for Blyth Valley voted to formally oppose the controversial 850-acre Shotton site in open countryside near Cramlington.
