Paul Thirlwell will return to training today just two weeks after fracturing his skull, but he will still not be able to play a part in Sunderland's play-off challenge.

The midfielder suffered the horrific injury while playing for Sunderland Reserves against Everton on April 27 and was kept in hospital for two days after being knocked unconscious for more than five minutes.
