More houses being sold THE number of homes changing hands continued to edge up in May as low interest rates and house price falls tempted buyers back to the market. Around 62,000 residential properties costing more than pounds 40,000 were sold over the month, 7% more than in April, according to HM Revenue & Customs. The figure was 50% above the low of 41,000 reached in January.

Full story: page 4 Fixed-rate mortgages edge up THE average cost of a two-year fixed-rate mortgage broke through the 5% barrier for the first time since January this week. Lenders are now charging an average of 5.04% to homeowners who want to fix their repayments for two years, up from 4.92% yesterday and 4.74% at the beginning of last week.
