March promises to be decisive for Newcastle United and Middlesbrough but Glenn Roeder and Gareth Southgate will have to prove their credentials off the field as well as on it as they seek to gain their all-important coaching badges.

Both had to gain special dispensation in 2006 to manage their clubs, as neither hold the Uefa Pro Licence required by the Premier League. Both are at important stages of their courses ( Roeder sitting his Pro Licence while Southgate studies for the lesser B Licence ( just as their teams approach critical periods of the season. It comes as well as looking to finish their league campaigns strongly ( Newcastle entertain AZ Alkmaar in the last 16 of the Uefa Cup on Thursday and Boro host Manchester United in Saturday's FA Cup quarter-final.
