THE Labour Party in Newcastle is strongly opposing the city council policy on student housing. This is, presumably, because it is thought that this opposition will gain it support from students.
What the Labour Party is overlooking is that the student housing policy is good for students as well as long-term residents. It is good for students because the construction of 5,000 purpose-built bed spaces will drive down the often exorbitant rents in the present student houses and, at the same time, provide choice for second and third-year students.See the full content of this document
