ENTERPRISE zones were popular in the in the 1970s and 80s as a way of attracting inward investment and encouraging business start- ups as the North-East came to terms with the loss of its primary industries such as coal, steel and shipbuilding. They were found in towns including Consett and Shildon and were still in existence early this decade. Cobalt Business Park and Balliol Business Park, North Tyneside, were some of the most successful in attracting new businesses.
Companies in enterprise zones enjoyed freedom from business rates for the 10 years until 2005, 100% tax allowances on the costs of industrial buildings and sometimes rent-free periods from developers.See the full content of this document
