FORCING counter-terrorism detectives into a "race against the clock" could put the public at risk, former Scotland Yard chiefs warned last night.

Lord Stevens of Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, and Andy Hayman said officers needed to be able to hold suspected terrorists for more than 14 days in "exceptional" cases.
