No-one likes paying taxes ( and no-one ever will ( but the findings of a survey by the Alliance & Leicester on the issue of stamp duty raises rather more questions than it answers.

Many first time buyers are, apparently, caught by surprise by the added cost of stamp duty, according to a leading mortgage lender.
