IT was still in the era of steam trains I used to help the signalman at Scremerston level crossing open and close the gates as locomotives such as The Mallard hauled trains along the LNER line through Berwick.

I was a train spotter, and in one of the Ian Allan annuals of those days I learned of a Swiss railway which not only made its way through the spectacular Alps, it went through the north face of the Eiger and on to Europe's highest-altitude railway station - an amazing 3,454 metres.
