The subscription season is over but the summer programme began on Friday with the Northern Sinfonia playing to a full house. No, not at the first night of the Proms - this was the orchestra's film music night at The Sage, which going by the ringing applause would make a popular annual fixture.

Subtly amplified for the wide cinematic sound, the opening 20th Century Fox fanfare ran straight into Elmer Bernstein's galloping Magnificent Seven theme, his music for The Great Escape another echo of 1960s blockbuster movies.
