Drugs giant Sanofi-Synthelabo, which employs 700 in the North- East, saw shares jump yesterday on renewed speculation it would merge with larger rival Aventis.

As both French companies face threats to patents this year, they are likely to look for savings. Speculation they could merge into a $100bn company to compete with the larger US-based Pfizer and Britain's GlaxoSmithKline has risen since November.
