WHILE not without precedent, the decision by shareholders to vote down the bonus scheme for directors of Newcastle house builder Bellway will be widely regarded as a seismic victory for boardroom best practice.

The scale of the protest vote at yesterday's meeting makes plain just how angered shareholders were by the decision by the trio to award themselves the payments - totalling some pounds 632,500 - as reward for their own performance.
