Ways in which a North school has used its sports college status to boost language teaching could be rolled out to the rest of the country after impressing some of the country's top education officials.

The scheme at Ashington High School, in Northumberland, has proved successful at getting more children to do French at GCSE by combining interest in foreign sports stars and events with language skills.
