Rugby League first came to prominence at Gateshead back in 1934 when Great Britain retained the Ashes with a 19-14 victory against Australia. A crowd of 15,576 witnessed a famous victory at Redheugh Park, the former home of Gateshead Football Club. Seventy years on and Gateshead's Rugby League and football teams still share the same venue, the International Stadium.

* THUNDER sit atop the North-East Rugby League pyramid but the region's only professional club are one of three Gateshead-based sides. Gateshead Panthers Junior RLFC (GheadPanthers@AOL.COM) and Gateshead Storm (info@gateshead-storm.com) offer players of all abilities the opportunity to try their hand at one of the country's fastest growing sports.
