Summary
Rugby League first came to prominence at Gateshead back in 1934 when Great Britain retained the Ashes with a 19-14 victory against Australia. A crowd of 15,576 witnessed a famous victory at Redheugh Park, the former home of Gateshead Football Club. Seventy years on and Gateshead's Rugby League and football teams still share the same venue, the International Stadium.
