NORTHUMBERLAND'S new super council has had to bring in external contractors at a cost of pounds 50,000 to tackle a backlog of benefits applications left by one of its predecessor authorities.

A specialist software company has taken on the task of dealing with 7,469 outstanding claims over an eight-week period, and is due to complete the work this month.
