MORE than pounds 1.25m was spent on salaries for the North East's senior health bosses last year. The figure, which covers eight health trusts across the region, brought fresh criticism from unions last night who say NHS bosses should not need "golden handcuffs".

The breakdown of chief executive salaries came the day after it was revealed that, across the country, they received pay hikes which were on average more than twice those given to nurses.
