DRIVING down from the Highlands, I heard something on the radio which made me deeply uneasy. Reception wasn't always good but I heard enough to disturb me. It was a discussion between a representative of the legal profession and an official discussing changes in the legal aid system.

The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 guarantees an arrested person the right to advice from a solicitor. It says: "A detained person has a right to free legal advice and to be represented by a solicitor. The solicitor's only role in the police station is to protect and advance the legal rights of his client.
