RETIRED vet Alistair Clarke picks up a degree today a few weeks before his 92nd birthday. The degree in veterinary medicine comes 53 years after he started work as a vet on Tyneside.

Alistair, who lives in Darras Hall in Ponteland, Northumberland, qualified in 1947 at Glasgow Veterinary College and was awarded membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
