A SPECIAL concert is taking place this weekend to commemorate one of the worst mining disasters in the history of the region.
In 1862, around 204 men and boys lost their lives in the Hester Pit of Hartley Colliery, near Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, when an engine beam broke and plunged down the pit. Debris blocked the only shaft and trapped the victims inside.See the full content of this document
