Regulator Demands Water Firms Cut Their Prices

WATER industry regulator Ofwat yesterday tore up industry plans for price hikes and demanded a 4% cut in average household bills over the next five years.

The 4% fall will bring the average bill to pounds 330 before inflation and although customers will benefit, the news is likely to upset water companies, which called for an average pounds 28 above- inflation hike in their business plans. It was announced in Ofwat's "draft determination" on price limits for water and sewerage costs in England and Wales for the 2010-15 period.
