HISTORICAL data suggest a recession can be a good time to start up on your own. Recent figures from the British Bankers' Association seem to support this, with 142,500 small businesses reported as starting new banking relationships in the first quarter of 2009.

Corporate giants Disney, McDonald's, Burger King, Procter & Gamble and Microsoft are just some of those that started life during an economic downturn and while many contemplating starting their own business won't have such grand dreams just yet, they can get a lot of support and advice to help them on their way.
