ASECRET multi-millionpound deal paid for with public funds was last night struck between Newcastle Airport chiefs and their former chief executive.

The 11th-hour deal was agreed just before the start of a High Court case due to begin today in which the airport was claiming pounds 8.5m from ex-boss John Parkin and the estate of former finance director Lars Friis, who died in 2006.
