Pub values once again rose significantly with prices increasing by 6.2pc in 2003, partly as a result of a shortage of properties for sale.

David Lee of Christie & Co says the shortage of pubs for sale in 2003, particularly freehold freehouses, was driven by a benign economy and an unexpectedly hot summer which meant most publicans enjoyed a good year's trading and were under no pressure to sell.
