THE Commons Act 2006, which updates laws going back to 1285, has been introduced to protect common land in England.

Jonathan Thompson from law firm Smithson Clarke, with offices in Alnwick and Newcastle, specialising in agricultural law matters, says: "Common land is vital to farming, but the traditional customs that have kept the land in good order for centuries, have broken down in some areas.
