Summary
Grey's Monument was erected in 1838 to commemorate the passing of Prime Minister Earl Grey's Great Reform Bill of 1832, which gave more people the right to vote. Charles Earl Grey was born at Howick in Northumberland in 1764 and became county MP at the age of 22.
The monument's unveiling was celebrated by the ringing of church bells throughout Newcastle, while the mayor donated medals, gold and silver to a time capsule buried at the monument's base with the original plans.See the full content of this document
