Summary


Restoration plans at an abandoned Northumberland mine earmarked for a pounds 20m tourism development are being opposed by council officials concerned about a proposal to pile tonnes of soil and rubble on the site.

Two months ago, businessman Nigel Smith unveiled ambitious proposals to re-develop the former Whittle Colliery complex, near Alnwick, with a hotel, log cabins, forest walks and fishing lakes to create up to 150 new jobs.
