Scores of Durham's traffic cops are tomorrow stepping back in time in a radical move which police bosses say recaptures elements of the Heartbeat policing of the 1960s.

The migration programme takes more than 100 officers to seven new bases across the force area in a move designed to give a "fresh injection of experience" to local policing, and at the same time keep front-line bobbies out on the streets.
