Bar and club operator Absolute Leisure is defying the downturn in the leisure industry with the pounds 3m transformation of a complex in York.

The Newcastle-based company has been given the go-ahead to redevelop the city's Barbican Centre, previously a 1,500-seat auditorium and sports venue, into a 200-seater restaurant, bar and conference and banqueting centre.
