THE Government's decision yesterday to announce plans to accept far-reaching reforms of public sector pensions seemed deliberately intended to inflame relations with the trade unions.

After all, talks between ministers and the unions over the changes in wake of Lord Hutton's report on the subject had apparently been progressing well and on a perhaps surprisingly amicable basis until yesterday.
