MARK Penny, a double Northumberland county champion last season, slipped back into gear with victory in the Fenwick-Smith Trophy at Alnmouth on Saturday, writes TIM TAYLOR.

Penny held his nerve to recover from a bad position in his morning round. Three over after nine holes, he was five under coming home and transformed his day at the 16th, where he sunk a 40ft putt from off the green for eagle and at 17, where he chipped in from 35ft with a sand wedge for birdie.
