Summary


BUSINESSMAN and philanthropist John Burdon had aspirations to become a country gentleman.

Having inherited a vast amount of money from his father, who made his fortune in coal and lime, Burdon bought a country manor, Hardwick Hall, near Sedgefield, County Durham, in the 18th Century. He then set about creating a park, with a large lake as its centrepiece.
