Parents battling to save Northumberland's 45 middle schools last night stepped up their campaign as a critical phase looms in the debate over education reforms in the county.

Campaigners are holding a series of public meetings across the county to rev up their fight to retain its existing three-tier system of first, middle and high schools in the face of plans to switch to a two-tier system of primaries and secondaries.
