The bill for police overtime in the North-East has soared by more than pounds 7m since Labour came to power, official figures have revealed.

Home Office statistics show the cost of overtime for officers has risen from pounds 10m in 1997-98 to more than pounds 17m in 2005-06 across the police forces covering the region.
