Regulators have launched an inquiry in the wake of complaints from North-East MPs into additional charges heaped on consumers by communication companies such as BT.

The industry-wide review by Ofcom comes after Blaydon MP Dave Anderson raised with ministers the move by British Telecom to charge customers pounds 4.50 extra a quarter if they fail to pay their bills by direct debit.
