North Police Deny Arrests to 'Top Up' Dna Data

ARRESTS are only made when a police investigation calls for it and not to top up DNA database numbers, Northumbria Police have said.

The force's comments came in the wake of claims by the Government's genetics advisers - the Human Genetics Commission - that police across the country to make arrests just to get people's DNA registered. Last night Chief Inspector Fred Elrick said: "Northumbria Police conforms to National standards of DNA sampling. We sample all people detained at a police station for a recordable offence unless they are already on the National DNA Database. The exception to this rule is when a voluntary sample is provided to assist in the investigation of an offence. In this case the provider has the option of having their sample permanently stored on the database.
