Summary
In the last few days, a lot of words have been said about jobs in the public sector. First of all, there were tentative announcements about civil service jobs being re-located from the South to the North, and then the Chancellor surprised everybody by pledging to cut the total number by 40,000.
The reactions to all this in the North-East have demonstrated not only that the region was failing once again to get its act together on an important issue, but that there are some very profound differences in approach to regional economic policy.
