Summary


Investment plans at the region's last deep pit were dealt a blow yesterday when it missed out on the latest round of state aid for the UK coal industry.

Energy Minister Mike O'Brien announced a further pounds 16.5m package of subsidy for nine pits under the Government's pounds 60m Coal Investment Aid (CIA) scheme ( but there was no cash this time around for 400-man Ellington Colliery.
