ALMOST 100 ambulances have been bought to carry the North East's most obese patients, The Journal can reveal. The North East Ambulance Service has spent over pounds 10m on 98 ambulances equipped for heavier patients in a programme of vehicle replacement over the last five years.

It has also invested in heavy-duty stretchers and special weight- bearing wheelchairs.
