SCALED-down plans for a massive new opencast coal mine in Northumberland have been given a resounding thumbs down by families living nearby.

Campaigners fighting the 750-acre site at Shotton, near Cramlington, say the revised proposals by the Banks Group have done nothing to quell fierce opposition from more than 2,000 local people.
