A campaign against a new landfill site in a North-East village moved a step forward yesterday when Euro-MPs decided that the protesting families' case warranted further investigation.

Last December villagers battling a decision to allow waste management firm Sita to tip 450,000 tonnes of waste a year at Pathhead Quarry in Ryton, Gateshead, submitted a petition to the European Parliament.
