Summary
I AM trying to trace my husband's ancestor. I have a gold ring handed down through his family, inscribed: "Mr R Ellison from his friends, a mark of respect, August 1866." According to the 1851 census, Mr Ellison was a coal miner in Cowpen and I am puzzled about how he would have received the ring. Perhaps it resulted from a 'heroic deed'.
He was born in Cowpen, so I assume it was a pit village named after or by the owner and that when the pit closed, the village went. Can anyone help me trace the pit and village? If anyone does respond by email, would they please put "Ellison" in the subject box as I delete anything I do not recognise?
