Runs were at a premium on a rain-affected wicket at Ashbrooke and it was Newcastle who came out on top in the Wear-Tyne derby with Sunderland.

Only 180 runs were scored all day and, despite reducing Sunderland to just 88, the Tynesiders knew they had a battle on their hands. But Gordon Muchall rose to the occasion and his innings of 48 was crucial to a three-wicket win.
